Queen descends to the ground/breaks her wings and tunnels down/she wanders in patterns and petals divine/while the boys wander aimless around til they drop/drop in death while the queen runs machines of the whole colony til only the lifeblood is left im a simple guy/ i gotta confide/my visions are filled with the vaguest desire to have a few kicks before i die/with all that's left/ I'm shaken by the blackened earth that the bony white hand has torched to make way for some rides The boys ferry out for some fries/she tease em with a simple disguise/ tends her garden of frost and its ancestral moss while the fig tree stands bare to the sky/sight and sound/ smell and taste/ the queen runs machines of the whole colony with not one leaf left for waste

about

Three of these songs came in a flurry, and though I gave them expansive arrangements, they are fingerstyle guitar songs at heart.  I read an interview with guitarist Matt Sweeney where he mentioned the virtues of dropped step tuning and flat wounds and it sounded like something to try. Dropped step retains the relationships of the strings to each other, but dramatically alters the feel. Its a pretty wonderful (and overlooked) tuning. I went a little further- dropped the Es all the way to C (CGCFAC) and found some magic. The strings hadn't arrived in the mail before acoustic demos of "Atlantis", "Superorganism", and "Tremble Sweet Gum" were down. I decided these songs needed more full arrangements  and added bass, keys, drums/percussion, etc. I put down the Martin and used my new Epiphone Sheraton (which sounds fantastic straight out of the factory). "Nothing Train" was in progress when we were doing Plague Saints (plaguesaints.bandcamp.com/releases) but didn't make it on the album. Jonathan added some great drums and guitar to this one. "Wild State" is an older song that I wrote on the piano and rearranged. You can read about the individual songs further by clicking on them if you are curious. I had a lot fun recording this batch- felt good.
Enjoy,
Eben
